 Why social studies?

The primary purpose of the social studies is to help young people (and adults) develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse society in an interdependent world.

Do you agree? Disagree?

Think about how we interact with each other. Think about all the people we encounter in one day. Think about what their lives are like, how we affect them, and how they affect us.

I teach social studies because I feel it is important for our youngest citizens to realize these connections and how they are affected by the events past and present.

About Me:

I graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Secondary Education Social Studies. I have been teaching in education since 1992 and have been teaching in Alternative Education for 17 years. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I have worked for Amherst County Public Schools for the last five and a half years.

Hobbies: I am an avid watcher, collector and lover of all types of movies. My favorite of which is Star Wars! I have a love of a wide variety of music. I incorporate both into my classroom. I read a wide variety of books. Being from the Pittsburgh area, I am an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-time Superbowl champions!), Penguins (5-time Stanley Cup champions!), and Pirates (5-time World Series champions!)

My Classroom!

My classroom represents many facets of the social studies. I mix it up with photos of famous people from all walks of life and photos of my current and past students! This is a sample of my room:
